JOB TITLE: ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER
Starting Salary: $12.15 / hr


GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This is a semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of the Animal Control complex and the collection and management of animals resulting from complaints from Gilchrist County residents. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Animal Control Services. Supervision consists primarily of job performance checks under the Department of Public Safety.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintains Animal Control grounds, buildings, and vehicles. This includes general appearances, custodial, and repairs.
  2. Responsible for care, feeding, and watering of animals at the facility.
  3. Maintain bookkeeping records in an appropriate manner for auditing purposes.
  4. Will be responsible for coordinating adoption program.
  5. Display initiative and capability of following instructions.
  6. Will greet and assist the public in a respectful manner.
  7. Attends and participates in meetings as directed by the Director of Public Safety or Animal Control Committee.
  8. Maintains and promulgates necessary Department rules and regulations in accordance with rules, regulation and policy.
  9. Responds to calls, inquiries, and all other animal related complaints.
  10. Must be capable of picking up and managing animals in their environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of Modern techniques, methods and procedures of Animal Control and the ability to apply them.
  • Knowledge of the use and care of all types of equipment, materials, and supplies to perform Animal Control functions.
  • Ability to plan, direct, coordinate, and organize an effective animal control program.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to address civic organization and other public or private groups on subjects relative to Animal Control.
  • Ability to investigate animal bites and enforce animal quarantine laws.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.

(A comparable amount of training, education, or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications)

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must possess a valid Class "D" Commercial Florida Drivers License. Must possess certification in Animal Control and be certified in euthanasia.


ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:

  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Must endure sustained acts of physical exhaustion and endure periods of duty under unfavorable situations.
  • Heavy (45 pounds and over) lifting and carrying.
  • Reaching, pulling, pushing, balancing, smelling, throwing.
  • Climbing (include ladders).
  • Walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, bending, stooping, jumping, running.
  • Driving vehicles and using specialized equipment for Animal Control.


ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Hazardous conditions; disease.
  • Stressful situations.
  • Works inside and outside.

Salary Range - $36,953-$61,723/yr
